Consumers that find touring bikes and rode bikes uncomfortable often purchase a mountain bike to get around town. A mountain bike has wider tires that absorb the shock of the road. In addition, mountain bikes have heavily padded seats.

In 2005 the biking industry experienced its best year ever in terms of sales. This was largely due to interest in the mountain bike. Total bike sales were almost $20 billion for the year.

Mountain biking is also popular for off-road biking. Buy a mountain bike for the adrenaline rush of enjoying the woods at a high speed. Of course, buy a helmet for safety's sake.
